Now, that I have actively started writing the essay, I constantly have issues with overwriting. I allocated a specific word count to each chapter to plan my total word count of 6,000 words. Each chapter of the main body is supposed to only have 800 words. Yet, after finishing the first chapter the word count was up to 1,499, the same with the second and all the other chapters I have finished so far.
I begin to wonder if the topic is not too broad. I have the impression that I could write a thorough, analytical essay on the basis of each chapter. I also have an extensive body of research material that makes it difficult to decided which quote I shall choose. There are so many to choose from.
I find it very difficult to limit myself and sometimes cut theory short just to make the word count. If I would have more time, I would focus on one particular aspect of the essay and change my essay question slightly. But I do not have the time now, which bothers the perfectionistic side of my personality. On the other hand, I know for myself that I could write a much better essay, if I would have more time on my hand. I am content and happy with what I have achieved so far and will focus on cutting back the content to make the overall word count. I have only a few weeks left to do that.
